Nominees for the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning, December 12, 2016, and Georgia fared well, with Stranger Things, Atlanta, Hidden Figures and Confirmation all getting nods in at least one category. Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the award ceremony airs Sunday, January 8 at 8 PM ET on NBC with host Jimmy Fallon.

The 8-episode first season of Netflix’s Stranger Things was released in July and the show became one of the networks’ most watched and best reviewed. Series star Winona Ryder is a Golden Globe nominee for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series. The series itself, filmed entirely in Georgia, is in the running for Best Television Series – Drama. The show was recently presented with an American Film Institute (AFI) Award for TV Program of the Year.

Another hit with fans and critics alike, Donald Glover’s 10-episode series Atlanta on the FX network also received nominations in two categories: Glover for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy and the show for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Atlanta recently won an AFI award for TV Program of the Year, and a Critic’s Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series.

Hidden Figures is a feature film opening January 6, 2017, about a team of African-American women who provide NASA with essential mathematical data needed to launch the program's first space missions. It received two nominations from the HFPA, including Octavia Spencer for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, and one for Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, and Benjamin Wallfisch--the film’s composers--for Best Original Score – Motion Picture.

HBO’s telefilm “Confirmation,” about law professor Anita Hill and her role in the hearings to confirm Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court also got a Golden Globe nomination for its star Kerry Washington (as Anita Hill) for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. She received an Emmy nomination for the role but did not win.
